Double Trouble!

Double Trouble!

I was asked the other day if the double-breasted suit would return. My instinct was to say ‘hell no’ – but then I paused.

See, everywhere I look now the 2 and 3 button suit (great for everyday wear) is being slowly nudged aside by the swagger of a double-breasted. Its glamour and heritage (1930’s; not MC Hammer) led to the evolution of the Pea Coat and the Trench Coat, both styles timeless and inventive.

Try the double breast if you want to make a statement.  To wear it with swagger, make sure you are a man of medium to tall build and that it’s tailored at the waist, to make the shoulder more prominent.

Pictured is a classic heather grey double-breasted suit updated for today with a subtle shine finish. Super-slim structured pants in super-fine, supple fabric complete the outfit by designer Kim Seo Ryong. Find a great tailor and make something similar together!

However if the double breast just doesn’t interest or ‘suit’ you, just make sure you’ve got 2-3 great 2 and 3 button hole suits, preferably in charcoal grey and one pinstripe, in your wardrobe. More about the pinstripe next time …
