MSP Thread Trend Alert – October 2010

Here’s our round up of the latest and greatest in menswear this October. Enjoy!

Levi’s® Work Wear By Billy Reid

On October 10th 2010, Levi unveiled the “Levi’s Work Wear by Billy Reid” collection through a series of celebrations at New York Fashion week, simultaneous parties at multiple Billy Reid stores across the United States, and a host of other great happenings.

Levi’s collaboration with the Florence, Alabama-based designer has been the talk of the town since it was initially announced in February when Billy Reid was given the GQ and CFDA “Best New Menswear Designer in America” award and the opportunity to design a collection with Levi’s. Like the last two years’ award recipients, Daiki Suzuki from Engineered Garments and New York-based Robert Geller, Levi’s invited the 2010 Best New Menswear Designer in America into its archives and challenged him to explore and reinterpret Levi’s heritage through his own lens. The result: a limited edition collection of collaboratively designed garments that celebrate the merger of a great American icon and a new one in the making.

The “Levi’s Work Wear by Billy Reid” collection is a tribute to the American worker; from field hands to songwriters, from builders to artists, from San Francisco, CA, to Florence, AL. It’s recognition of American craftsmanship, built with a profound respect for heritage work wear, heirloom quality, and southern tradition. The hero product that everyone is lusting after is the black wool trucker jacket, another in Levi’s series of special-edition work wear inspired Truckers. Other items in the collection include a hunting coat, a denim workshirt, a bag, a series of red and green fleece pieces as well as two bottoms, a 505 and a customized rigid 501. And, like all of Levi’s Fall 2010 collaborations, the entire collection is hand-crafted by skilled workers right here in the USA. The collection will be available exclusively at Bloomingdales stores and Billy Reid shops. The Trucker, like the special edition Trucker designed with Opening Ceremony, will also be available on Levi.com.

Hermes and Yamaha – a marriage made in V-Max heaven

French fashion house Hermes is not new to the world of motor powered vehicles. We have helicopters and cars in collaboration with the brand. This October heralds the launch of their one-off leather-clad V-Max concept bike – a collaboration with Yamaha. This is the second time that the two companies have worked together.

“Hermes craftsmen were let loose to combine ‘mechanics and leather, to fulfil the dreams of motorcycles’. The idea was, according to Yamaha and Hermes, to “Reinforce the sculptural lines of this unique object and underline its emotional power.”

The result has the £20k machine’s non-mechanical parts dressed in Skipper buffalo leather, the main parts being the tank, seat, mudguards, headlight cover, exhaust silencers and grips. Finishing touches include brushed aluminium mirrors, meter case and exhaust. There are no plans to add this version of V-Max to its present or future range of bikes and apparently Yamaha and Hermes worked together on a similar project on a Virago 15 years ago.

We’re all big fans of quality leather jackets and Noir Basic offers quite a few of them. The latest and greatest is their Lambskin Leather Motor Jacket.

“Fur lined, motor jacket from Parisian label Noir Basic, Fall Winter 2010 collection. Straight fit in mid-weight lamb skin leather with large ribbed leather panel on the yoke and continues down onto the arms. Details zip-line cuffs, double leather strap buckled cuffs on the hem at waistline, following zip pockets and an off centered front zip line.”

The jacket is entirely made in France and now available from Oki-Ni. Love to love it!
