New York Fashion Week 2011: Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger's outstanding campaign

Nothing excites us more than knowing where a successful person has emerged from. Because tales of rags to riches is an absolute passion of ours because we’re in the business of empowering you!

One such gent is Tommy Hilfiger.

Born the second of nine children in NYC, Hilfiger’s career in fashion began as a high school student in 69′ when he opened a small chain of stores called, ‘People’s Place’. All he had was $150, but in his heart he had more than enough to take him through a now 25 year career and the growth of an outstanding global brand.

Exciting, preppy and coordinated.

From the start, Tommy had a goal to bring fashion from London to upstate New York. Enthusiastic and entrepreneurial, he started designing for the boutiques he always admired, and thus moved to NYC. Here, pursuing a career as a full time designer, his elegance and craftsmanship caught the eye of a businessman who was looking at launching a new men’s range and Tommy had the ideas to approach menswear in a new way…least I say the rest is history.

Tommy’s charisma has forged relationships with a wide-range of cultural influencers and trendsetters. His ability to market his collections is unique and powerful; his modernized button-downed shirts, chinos and other time-honoured classics are still signature pieces for him, and are always detailed and updated. As the years move on, Tommy’s eye is still set on traditional yet youthful pieces with a relaxed attitude  and distinct collections.

A relaxed, elegant and classy style.

In a way, Hilfiger has been the Andy Warhol of fashion, where he’s merged designs and colour with popular culture. It’s simple, but it works with a quality that lasts, and attracts the repeat business. Hilfiger denim is cutting edge and musical. It’s cool yet understated removing you from the fashion victim labeling. His diverse achievements in business, retail and fashion have earned him a variety of distinguished awards. (Too many to mention)…MSP are always on the look out of entrepreneurial designers who reinvest all their thanks and gratitude into other ventures, so we will mention – well, a couple of Hilfiger’s greatest achievements.

Hilfiger was awarded the highest honour in 2002 for his philanthropic efforts for helping American Youth via D.A.R.E; Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Giving back is the greatest reward gents. After many awards for his charitible efforts, Hilfiger lauched The Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation to enrich the physical and intellectual well being of youth with a major emphasis on education and cultural programs that impact a diverse population. Hilfiger is actively involved in a number of charities and causes, including the Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King Jr., National Memorial Project Foundation and the Anti-Defamation League. He has also served on the board of directors for The Fresh Air Fund, a New York based group that has been sending underprivileged children to summer camp since 1877, and the Race to Erase MS (Multiple Sclerosis) since 1994.

Attractive, intelligent and sophisticated.

In 2009, The Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation donated over $2 million to Millennium Promise, a non-profit organization founded in 2005 to help end extreme poverty. The partnership celebrates the Foundation’s globalization of its philanthropic mission to help build a healthy and civil society by supporting education, physical well-being and cultural programs. It also marks the first major global effort supported by The Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation.

Tommy Hilfiger’s new menswear range is showing at the New York Fashion Week today, February 13th at 8pm.
